Currently I do two operations: branch the current version, giving it a new name (but I keep the old WC around) and checkout the new branch. After that I have both the original and the new branch available. Doing a switch on the original WC would confuse things (well, it would confuse me!) since it would have the old project version name.

Yup. I just thought a one-and-done would be a nice to have.
