Or you could use WinMerge or Beyond Compare to find the diffs in a matter of seconds.

To get all the great new stuff in 1.7 you have to upgrade your WC (you said repository, I assume you meant working copy). But, you only have to do it once and then your done. You could kick it off right before you leave for the day and then come in with your wc's upgraded.
