Not necessarily. The upgrade code seems not to be as robust as
everything else. I'm thinking we should add a note to the download
page and/or release notes to say:

* Commit all changes, create a patch or put changed files somewhere
safe and start with a clean unmodified working copy.
* Maybe update first, then cleanup, then upgrade.
* It may still not work, and if not just make a fresh checkout.
