"problem contacting the server", only in some cases

When trying to show the log for a project, I get notified that "There has been a problem contacting the server" and prompted to work offline. I'm really confused, though, since this problem just started happening, and only happens in certain situations.

I can log in to machine A, open the Repo-browser, select any folder in my repository, and select "Show log". It will work correctly every time. In particular, I want to see the log for folder X; it works just fine.

I can also log in to machine B, open the Repo-browser, connect to the same repository, and select any folder *except* for foler X, and select "Show log" successfully. However, if I try to show the log for folder X, I get the "problem contacting the server" message.

Similarly, other users can log onto their own machines (i.e., machine C), and can successfully view the log for any folder in our repository, including folder X. But if any of these other users log on to machine B, then they have the same symptoms as when I log in: they can view the log of any folder except folder X.

To make it more mysterious, this used to work. Up until last week, anyone could log on to machine B and view the log for folder X.

What are all the kinds of problems that could cause this error? What else can we look at to regain connectivity to folder X on machine B?
