Simple new guy question about repository.

Hello, I am still learning and have a simple question. I have been coding solo for many years but in this economy I will need to work with a group of coders at a company. They require that I know SVN so I am crunching to learn it. I believe I have the basics down, but I am curious about the repository stored on their server. So are the files in the repository kinda like a backup and the SVN admin will transfer the files over to the real site to go live? Or are we actually editing the files (in the repository) that are being used by the public website?
