Actually, you could have saved yourself a *lot* of work and grieve here:
Why don't you just sum up:
serf is a lot slower than neon:
   neon checkout time: 14 seconds, transferred bytes shown: 1080kBytes
   serf checkout time: 2min 14seconds, transferred bytes: 5.33MBytes

A few bytes instead of megs, can be stored in our mailing list archives
and indexed by search engines, everyone can see immediately what the
problem is without needing to watch two lengthy (and honestly: boring)
videos (in a format that the one player that's installed on every
windows machine can't even play!).

With the above summary it's very clear what the problem is: our build
doesn't build serf with compression enabled...
