Eclipse & Tortoise get along just fine if you configure everything
appropriately.

I use Subclipse, TortoiseSVN, AnkhSVN & the command-line client all on
one system, on mostly the same WCs, all the time.

Don't use something because it's popular, use it because it fits your needs.
