avoid having to lock files to save...? new user

Hey,

I am new here, but have been using tortoise at work for the past 6 months.

I am beginning to use it for myself on projects spread across four computers. Sometimes these projects are collaborative, sometimes they are not.

I am trying to find if there is a way to not have to lock the files in order to save modifications to them... and to deal with any conflicts as they arise. ...i thought this was the 'copy modify merge' workflow.... but i can't seem to set it up that way...

any suggestions?

thanks,

r.
