It's not only slow to load with the overlays for me, but the overlays
also seem to update much less reliably. (In the right pane, that is. I
know the left pane has always been unreliable.)

For example, if I make changes to a file and don't explicitly navigate
into the folder that the file is in, that folder (and its parents) will
never update to reflect the changes to the file. In this case "never" is
defined as "I left my computer on overnight and it still hadn't updated
by the morning".
