First of all, please do not top-post here.

Also, are you using TortoiseSVN? And do the paths in your externals
definitions contain backslashes ('\') as path delimiters?

If so, you'll need to replace those backslashes with regular slashes
('/') as backslashes are being interpreted as escape characters since 1.6.0.
