When I implemented this quite some time ago in revision 7901 SHIFT-DEL was
meant to remove them permanently, i.e. from the registry. In which dropdowns
does a DEL suffice?

IIRC, at that time Firefox and Internet Explorer also required SHIFT-DEL. It
seems as if a simple SHIFT is enough in Firefox 3.0.
