Thank you very much. Indeed Clemens said "use the process explorer" and
I discovered the TSVNCache had a fierce grip of the directory and I
wasn't sure if it was safe to kill him or not.

Right. We're done with this issue. Not only is the tortoise amazing -
the support of the folks on this is amazing, quick and totally correct.
I found the include/exclude directory thing and has also helped a lot.

I am in awe. Thank you everybody. I think I'll make a donation - this
is just the best!

  The OP is right. The problem is that while Tortoise is crawling the
  folder, it can't be renamed/moved/deleted. I have the issue all the
  time.

  I use Process Explorer to kill TSVNCache.exe, and then I
  delete/rename the folder before the respawned crawler gets to it.
