Check For Modifications does not respect sparse WC

It would be very useful if "Check for Modifications" could respect a sparse working copy. For instance, I have a working copy with only one top-level subdirectory checked out. Yet "Check for..." shows me hundreds of changed files in the directories that are not even part of the working copy. Perhaps a setting at least?
