TortoiseSvn in dfs share environment and windows performance

Happy new year,

I hope someone can give me a hint about a problem I have here.
We are running a windows xp network with a dfs (distributed file system) - means we have
one network drive mounted on (for example) I:\ and behind this there are different directories
that are on different servers (standing on different locations).

Now we have the following effect:

1. On a pc without tortoise I can work with the windows explorer with lets say "normal performance"
2. When installing TortoiseSvn then working in the windows explorer becomes very slow - including hangs of 30 seconds or more.
    As I could find out - network connections to the severs from the dfs happens (also when only working on the local harddisk).
3. After deinstalling TortoiseSvn performance is back to "normal"

So I assume, that when TortoiseSvn is installed more network requests for the dfs will be generated than when it is not installed.
I am not sure why this happens - might be a problem of windows or of tortoise.

Has someone an idea how to trace this down so that it will be possible to fix this (in our local network setup, in window or in tortoise what ever is the reason for this behaviour)?

Has someone a similar setup with or without these problems?
