I have no problem with advertising on tortoisesvn.net, so long as it's
useful and relevant. For example, I wouldn't have a problem with that
advert appearing in the navigation bar on the left. I could even live
with it if the heading above it was "Advertisement" instead of
"TortoiseSVN downloads". My concern is with a specific implementation
that has confused at least one user. I mentioned in my initial report
that I'm not sure how much ad revenue that specific ad brings in, but it
seems quite possible to me that it decreases ad revenue, by giving users
another reason to install AdBlock. If a TSVN web developer reading this
is concerned about ad revenue, could I suggest that you try the ad
somewhere else for a month, and gather some evidence about how it
affects revenue and downloads in practice? You might be pleasantly
surprised.

It may also be helpful to consider the inverse of this bug report: if
the advert we're discussing didn't exist, how would people react if I
wrote in saying "we should put an advert right at the top of the page,
so it's the first thing users see, with a 'download' button more
prominent than anything else on that page, so that we can get more ad
revenue out of people trying to work out how to download the program"?
