Additional disk space usage when checking out

From: ET <eyalteler_at_gmail.com>

I checked out an archive that takes about 2.5GB into a partition that
had not much more than that free space. However, it looks like the
checkout process required about 3GB on that partition, though it did
return to 2.5GB when it finished.

I'd like to understand why this extra disk space is required, and what
I can expect it to be (i.e., is it related to the data size?).

Thanks!
