What do the merge ranges have to do with automation? Or th UI?

You can try, but I won't take part in this discussion anymore. I'm tired
of repeating the same discussions every few months.

Also: we had this discussion before the 1.5 release, changing the
behavior now would mean breaking what our users got used to.
If you wanted to change this, you should have discussed this before the
1.5 release.
