Should we also mention that it works differently than (huge list of
applications which use number ranges as inputs) ?

We could however mention that it works the same way as e.g. the print
dialog when you specify pages to print from a document.

You're assuming that people are familiar with the command line client.
That assumption is completely wrong: most Windows users never ever even
tried the command line client and have no idea what an 'svn merge -r1:3'
would do.
