How do you remove a Tortoise SVN checkout?

I have an old SVN checkout for which the remote repository is no
longer maintained and has been removed. I want to keep the
application, but remove the SVN files and folder markings shown in
Windows Explorer.

To do this I thought I just needed to remove all the .svn folders,
which I've done. But in Windows Exploerer I still see folders with
the green check mark overlay. I see it on the top folder, all the
first-level folders, and for the second-level folders below the first
first-level folder. The check mark has been removed from all other
folder in the directory tree.

What else do I need to do?
