how can i make existing project source control in one step??

i read the help, and it said i can use the import menu to import my
project to the source control lib, but it seems that i was supposed to
create that lib manually first. ok, i create one, but when i
successfully import my project to the lib, it turns out my original
project is not source controlled yet. so i check out to that folder
where my existing project was hosted, but tortoise says file existing
confict, something like that.
It seems that i have to clear all those things in that folder first,
so that i can checkout successfully.
Is there any way to make my existing project source control in just
one step???
