"unknown hostname" means some problems with DNS. Does your proxy block
DNS too?

Well, without you telling us what those settings are we can't really
confirm this.

If your proxy doesn't even pass DNS through without authentication, then
you must use a plain IP address of your proxy server in your proxy
settings - otherwise the proxy settings can't be used (chicken-egg
problem: proxy server name can't be resolved to authenticate with it to
let DNS through).

AFAIK all known proxies. It only depends on how the proxies are configured.
