Repository not being updated

I have never used a version management system before so this may
explain some of my confusion. I just started using TortoiseSVN. I
am a single user, having installed this on a home PC (not networked),
WinXP OS. I have a repository, checked out the files, edited them,
then did a commit.

I want to confirm things are set up right so I went into the
repository via the Windows Explorer, the files have the created date
(another topic I understand), I open the file and my changes are not
there. If I go into the repository via the Repo-browser the file
dates are set to the changed date (I set the flag). I'm nervous and
want to make sure I have everything set up correctly before I start
trusting this. Does this all sound legitimate? Should I stay out of
the repository and trust the changes are getting made?
