setting up svn - cannot connect.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up a basic svn server.

Server is FreeBSD 6.2 running svn, version 1.4.0 (r21228)
client is winXP (or vista) running tortoiseSVN

initially I just want svn or even svn+ssh access - not http at this stage.

I've followed 2 receipes (loosely)
http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/bsd/2005/05/12/FreeBSD_Basics.html
and
http://www.razman.org/?q=node/2

and cannot get access to the svn server via either method.

I can access the svn repository locally using file:///

error messages from TortoiseSVN are things like
svn://192.168.0.104/
Error * Connection closed unexpectedly
svn+ssh://192.168.0.104/
<prompts for password>
Error * Connection closed unexpectedly

basically I can ssh to the machine, the svn service is set up (I
think) but I can't connect to it from the windows box.

is there something on the windows side I'm missing?
