The -r xxx part is important when we release and tag code. It is
recommended by the SVN book as well. I could leave it out but it means
that the extra step of adding it when tagging releases is required. I
see this as a much more laborious task than having it there in the first
place.

The -r also gives me a level of confidence that I am working with a
known stable copy of the external library.

Hope this adds clarification to the questions.
