Since there's absolutely no problem with having different versions for
client and server (all clients are fully compatible with any version of
the server as outlined in the compatibility section), there's no reason
for you to *not* update TortoiseSVN.

I haven't said anything about you flooding the mailing list.

First, it's not an attitude of mine but our policy. Second, I also don't
think it's rude. It is simply our policy to avoid spending our time with
problems which usually are already solved. We work on TortoiseSVN in our
spare time and we're not paid for doing so.
If you'd have to pay for an upgrade then I'd have to agree with you:
we'd have to provide help/support for older versions too. But that's not
the case, you get TortoiseSVN for free. Which means we simply expect you
to do maybe a little bit more in case you run into a problem: upgrade to
the latest version and check if it's still a problem there.

It's not as if we ignore problems that arise, in fact we're very fast
with fixing bugs here. But it's really annoying to spend time with
finding the root of a problem for older versions if we can't reproduce
it with the latest version.

If you can give me one good reason why we should spend our free/spare
time with older versions...

Look at it like this: with a commercial application you would have to
pay for every phone call when you're asking for help. With TortoiseSVN,
you don't have to pay at all but instead you can save your money but
you'll have to do a really little part on your own: upgrading.
