Error 2203 on install

When I attempt to install the latest version of TortoiseSVN
(TortoiseSVN-1.3.4.6692-svn-1.3.2.msi) on my very vanilla XP box, I get
an error message with a 2203 error code partway through the
installation, which then fails. This happens on the next-most-recent
installer as well. I've installed a great deal of other software on
this same machine using this (admin-privileged) account. Any idea what
might be happening, or how to diagnose the problem myself?
