An ill effect I have seen is that in a large workspace, a checkout or
update from the command line can invariably fail when tortoise is
installed.

Uninstalling tortoise to populate a new workspace or to do a large
update increases the chance of success (failure being a failed checkout
with the .tmp missing folder issue) a lot.

I use both clients interchangeably with no ill effects. They even share
the config files.
