What's the .subversion directory for?

Unfortunately, search engines remove the "." when I try to search. Thus I
end up searching for "subversion". :-) So I have to ask.

In addition to the normal .svn directories I keep finding a .subversion
directory. Mostly on mapped network drives, I think. Sometimes in
surprising places. I have removed them on occasion, to no detectable ill
effect. But they tend to get recreated. What are they? Maybe a cache?
Maybe the result of using the repo-browser?

Barry
