global-ignores configuration? I had the impression something more was
going on.

The Subversion book doesn't document the global-ignores pattern syntax
either [1]. It does list this as the default value:

*.o *.lo *.la #*# .*.rej *.rej .*~ *~ .#* .DS_Store

Hmmm, not exactly illuminating. I'll go ask on the Subversion lists.
