Ok! I changed the background to a greenish color. Works well!

May I suggest looking at Araxis Merge. It is a closed source commercial diff/merge utílity, but it is very nice UI-wise.

When one has move-information as well it would be straight forward to make a linking line between the text blocks. I'm not sure how feasible it would be to add such a view to TortoiseMerge, but I think it could be a nice addition.
Another possibility could be to draw linking lines between the lines in the locator bar, but it wouldn't be as easy to see.
Ideally would probably be to add them in both places. :-)
 
It is nice to see that you are making such great progress on your course work!
