I think that if this was implemented it would trigger further questions. How do we display the currently present externals so that they can be easily viewed/modified/deleted? Creating them is only one piece of the managing externals puzzle.

That would be my suggested solution as well. Then we could consider adding a shortcut to that dialog via right drag as a bonus.
