Yes, preferably you create working copies on the local filesystem. Depending
on the network-software, there can be issues when creating working copies on
Samba shares or other NAS filesystems.

Other sources of problems can be virus scanners. Try to configure them in
such a way that the .svn folders and the containing files are NOT scanned on
access.

You can attempt a new checkout, but keep the above advise in mind.
