I tried to reproduce it with the latest HEAD, and symptoms changed slightly.
It now crashes much more rarely (about 1 in 10 times) and not always
in the destructors.
Attached are two typical stack traces obtained by repeatedly hitting
F5/Esc to start
"TortoiseProc /commit" from Visual Studio and immediately close it.

I am starting to suspect that my VS install is somehow broken. The version is:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Version 8.0.50727.762 (SP.050727-7600)
