You're right. I was thinking of the white dot.

I guess I'm confused, but I was pretty sure that the white dot would
show in the margin on rows with whitespace changes, even with "Ignore
all whitespace" checked. But that must have been me dreaming, right?

I think it would be quite useful in any case. Notifying whitespace
changes in the margin, but not highlighting them as proper differences.
