Possible bug in TortoiseSVN Merge: can't get log messages relating to working copy

Apologies if this is already known; I found nothing on the issue tracker
or the upcoming changes file.

Using TortoiseSVN 1.4.0.7501 on Windows XP Pro, with a 1.3.0 server;
https to access repository.

If I check out a new working copy in the root of the C: drive (or
anywhere else), right click the top-level folder and select "Merge..."
from the Tortoise menu, I get the merge dialog.

This is in three panes, the lowest of which refers to the working copy.

If I click the 'Show log' button in that pane, I get the Tortoise 'Log
Messages' window, with an error dialog saying "Can't check path
'https:\\server\svn\path\to\wc': The filename, directory name, or volume
label syntax is incorrect."

I was expecting log messages for the branch pointed to by the working
copy.

This used to work on my previous version of TortoiseSVN, which I believe
was 1.3.5.6804, and used the same server.

The svn command line client is 1.4.0 (r21228), don't know if that's
relevant.

I would appreciate being cc-ed on any replies.

Thanks,
