To put it a better way; is it worth the extra binary size & maintenance overhead to support the few users that actually use the benefits it brings with it? Probably not I'm thinking.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's a bad idea.
Bringing in DirectX would add only two formats (I think) to the list
of already supported - TGA and DDS, while imposing an additional
dependency.

I will prepare a JS file for using ImageMagick as a preprocessor - it
supports "about 100" formats, and is free - as a quick and dirty
solution. Maybe at a later point a file API could be devised, with an
additional installer containing DLLs for a bunch of formats made
available for interested users, similar to how some media players come
with support for MP3 and Ogg Vorbis out of the box, then you can
download a bunch of esoteric audiophile lossless formats as additional
plugins.

Best regards,
Assen
