Have you tried setting TSVN to not use removable drives?
If not try exploring TortoiseSVN - Settings - Icon Overlays and see what
you can vary to improve your situation..
What version are you using? Which O/S.
It's a bit of a stab-in-the-dark for the developers to go looking for
problems without that info.

So every 15 mins the HDD(s) crank(s) up and reads everything from
scratch, just as it nearly finishes doing that from 15 minutes earlier
right through the night and all day. Hope that doesn't find it's way
onto my laptop, the battery lifetime would really suffer.
Sorry but that doesn't sound like a good idea, particularly since the
problems you have don't occur on my machine.
