^ was chosen because / causes big troubles with urls and paths. Even
Netscape/Mozilla has that problem, and text with that problem just looks
ugly. For those, it's not that big of a deal, because most messages
there don't have paths/urls in them. But SVN commit log messages have
those very often. And I just don't like a full path or just half a path
in italic in a log message.
