That should not be a problem because the 'word' does not start and end
with a / The only way a path will get italicised is if you have both
leading and trailing slashes, eg. /usr/fred/repos/ and even that could
be screened out by looking for a / in the middle.

Thunderbird supports / but not ^ for italics.
