I just had a colleague ask me how to do this yesterday. I wonder if
something can be done to make it easier to know about this feature.
For example:

TortoiseMerge has a "status bar" of sorts that usually says "For Help,
press F1". When the mouse is hovered over a long line change this text
to "Scroll horizontally with CTRL + wheelmouse".
