wrong autodetection of carachter coding in file

   Hi, All!

I've discovered a strange problem with detecting is file utf8 or ascii.
File is with $Date:$ keyword and it's expanded with utf-8 characters,
but file is in ascii encoding. If ascii character in first 10000 bytes
encountered all is right, otherwise file is detected as UTF-8.

Is it possible to not expand date with utf8 characters, may be it's
possible to expand it with only English letters? Or may be is it
possible to point out file type explicitly?
