I feel the same way, and that's why I don't use, say, RealPlayer. In the
case of TortoiseSVN I read the documentation and found the feature to be
non-evil and easily disabled. That's really not too much to ask of
users, and it's as good as asking in my book.

The project needs to do what is best for the majority of users. The
perceived risks of you and your personal firewall may not be high on
that list.

Most users probably want automatic version checks and cheerful audio to
help their experience along.

I recommend you create a .MST so your TortoiseSVN installs fit your
needs. I have one that disables the version check, removes the audio
files, etc because that's what *my* users need.
