That's not true. There are more developers out there that can wreck
their system than that can fix it. Large companies must have reliable
and closed desktops to be able to support flexible seating and stuff.
Allowing developers to just install anything is asking for a support
nightmare.

As a developer for a large company I am glad I can rely on the regular
support teams for fixing problems on my PC. Before we went to
standardized desktops, we were left on our own, without any support on
our PC's (even for the most basic stuff like mail and internet
browse). You don't want that.

OTOH, these larger companies should also have the skills to be able to
package anything their users need in such a way that it can be safely
rolled out to workstations.
