You know why I like the dialog? Since it's resizable it can show me more
information than a combobox or popup menu is ever willing to give away.
This is especially useful, if I want to choose one of several similar
commit messages which don't differ in the first 40 characters.

For me, apart from not looking as pretty as possible, the dialog has
improved the handling of previously typed commit messages.

IIRC we had "Last commit messages", which is not much different from
"recently written". Given 100 users there will always be 5 asking for a
commit message history no matter what we do.

It degrades *some* users experience...

Summing up the suggestions:
1) Move the button to the right again
2) Add a caption "recently written log messages" to the left of the button
3) Rename the button "Select" instead of "History"
4) Add a hint which explains the function in about as much detail as the
warning that is now displayed when you want to relocate a working copy :-)
