Then please say so (that you're assuming something).

Ok, explanation:

in single pane view, editing isn't allowed, as is saving. The reason
is that in single pane view, you can't really see the result, you only
see the difference between two files, not the resulting file. Allowing
editing in that view could lead to completely messed up files, because
you can't really see what you're doing.

That's why we won't enable saving in single pane view - ever.
