What had stopped working was something else, unrelated...? I'm not
sure, I've only had the chance to skim the list this week; interviews
and freelancing have kept me occupied.

It used to be the case that the installer unconditionally uninstalled
whatever was already installed, if anything, regardless of version. It
wasn't a "kosher" MajorUpgrade.
