I didn't use a unix client. Am using Tortoise SVN.
 
I should think tortoise would pass files of all types through without
mangling them on the way. Especially since both my repository and target
live on unix.
 
Looks like I have to give up on Tortoise. Seems to be more a
windows-centric tool.
