The cache speeds up the overlays dramatically, and makes recursive
overlays useable. It also makes explorer more responsive as it doesn't
hang while getting overlays status - that happens in the background.

1.2.0 also adds optional locking.

And there are many, many other improvements in 1.2.0 which improve the
general ease of use. See the release notes and changelog.
