[TSVN] Directly checking update status from repository?

Hello,

Is there any way to directly check if there are any newer files in the
repository, without first checking the local status of working copy?

The use case is following:

We have a huge directory, which contains lots of small files, and the
user likes to update some of those files, but not all of them.
At the moment the workflow is following:

-> Right click on folder
   -> TortoiseSVN -> "Check for modifications"
      -> Wait about 30mins
         -> Click "Check repository"
            -> Wait about 30mins
               -> Do update for selected files

So if it would be possible to somehow cut of this first (1) 30min
wait, that would be wonderful. Any ideas how to do that, except to use
TSVN 1.1.1. The TSVN used is 1.2.0, and the server is SVN 1.2.0.

If there isn't a way to do that, could it be possible to provide an
option to select which way "check for modifications" should work?

Thanks for your help,
Jani
