Is there anything I can do at my end to help out? Anything I can get / copy
/ dump / test? Would VNC access to the machine be useful in any way?

I did! That was my first thought when I couldn't reproduce it. But even
with ten folders on my desktop the scrollbar appears correctly on my
system. I don't know what else I can do to reproduce this :(
